Case Study: Jamie

Jamie’s parents wanted to commemorate his graduation with something a little different than the standard graduation photo. After visiting our website they had the idea to commission a Portrait from one of the photos that they had taken at Jamie’s Graduation Art Exhibition.

“We still ended up buying all of the normal graduation shots but the Portrait that you did for us made a fantastic present…”

Artist's Insight
1. Original Photo
2. Line Art

1. Our portraits may be created on the computer, but our techniques derive from those used in traditional painting.

This means that to get the best results the original photo should be of good quality, with the subject being prominent, well lit, and in focus.

2. Painting from a sketch instead of directly from a photo gives a richer, more organic finished product.

Therefore the first step is to create a line drawing based on the original photograph. Not only does this help to capture the character of the subject, but it also acts as the “bones” of the finished digital painting.

3. Digital Paint Layers
4. Finished Portrait

3. Much as in traditional painting, layers of colour are mixed and blended until the picture begins to take shape.

4. In our portraits we use the colours from the original photograph as a guideline, but make changes that we feel will serve the portrait better.

In this instance we have warmed the background up, substituting the cold, white light from the windows with a gentler, warmer yellow. Some reds have also been introduced to act as a counterbalance to all of the brown.
